About this chart

Alabama's 13 national championships since 1936 are the most of any school in the poll era, the latest coming in the 2020 season. A title here means a school finished No. 1 in the final AP Poll or Coaches Poll, so a season with a split verdict gives credit to two schools. Eleven seasons between 1936 and 2025 ended that way.

Notre Dame sits second with 8, followed by Ohio State, Oklahoma and USC with 7 each. Ohio State's seventh came in the 2024 season, and Indiana won the 2025 title, the first in its history. Schools' own claimed totals run higher than these counts, since they reach back before the poll era. Only schools with 3 or more titles are charted.

The data

Source: Wikipedia, College football national championships in NCAA Division I FBS (Poll era national championships by school, 1936-present: final AP Poll or Coaches Poll No. 1); cumulative titles at each season. Retrieved November 4, 2026. Definition: a title counts when the school finished No. 1 in the final AP Poll or Coaches Poll (poll era, 1936 onward), including split titles in the same season. Schools' own claimed totals are higher (e.g. Alabama claims 18, Michigan 12, Notre Dame 11, Princeton 28, Yale 27). USC's 2004 BCS title was vacated but its AP No. 1 finish is counted by the source. The 2026 season ends in January 2027, so the series ends with the 2025 season (Indiana). Schools shown have 3+ titles; Florida (3) is omitted for space.

Frequently asked questions

Which school has the most college football national championships?

Alabama has the most, with 13 poll-era national titles through the 2025 season, the latest in 2020. Notre Dame is next with 8, and Ohio State, Oklahoma and USC have 7 each. The count uses the final AP Poll or Coaches Poll.

Who won the 2025 college football national championship?

Indiana won the 2025 national championship, the first in program history, in the College Football Playoff final played in January 2026. The chart ends with the 2025 season because the 2026 season does not finish until January 2027.

Why does Alabama claim 18 titles when this chart shows 13?

Alabama's own claimed total is 18, but this chart shows 13 because it counts only poll-era titles from 1936 onward. The claimed figure includes earlier seasons such as 1925 and 1926, before the AP and Coaches polls were used.

Can I turn this chart into a video?

Yes. Open it in the editor, change the title, theme, colors or format (9:16 for Reels and TikTok, 16:9 for YouTube), and export an MP4. Free exports are 720p with a small watermark; Pro ($11.99/month) removes it and adds 1080p, 4K and 60 fps.
