About this chart

Emanuel Lasker's reign has never been matched: 27 years as world champion, from 1894 to 1921. Alexander Alekhine held the title for 17 years, Anatoly Karpov for 16, Garry Kasparov for 15 and Mikhail Botvinnik for 13. Magnus Carlsen was champion for 10 years, from 2013 to 2023, and won 5 title matches. Ding Liren held the title for just 1 year, 2023 to 2024.

The ranking uses the Wikipedia count of years as champion, which includes years held across split-title periods such as 1993 to 2006. Longer reigns do not always mean more title matches won: Lasker, Karpov and Kasparov each won 6. Viswanathan Anand and Wilhelm Steinitz held the title for 8 years each, and Bobby Fischer for 3. Gukesh Dommaraju's 2026 defence against Javokhir Sindarov in Geneva was not yet decided in the source.
