What the data shows

  • PlayStation 2 ranks #1 with 160.0M, ahead of Nintendo Switch (156.6M) and Nintendo DS (154.0M).

About this chart

The PlayStation 2 remains the best-selling game console ever, at more than 160 million units according to Sony. Nintendo's Switch is close behind at 156.59 million as of June 30, 2026, which moved it past the Nintendo DS (154.02 million) into second place. The chart ranks 15 machines by lifetime units sold worldwide and mixes home consoles with handhelds, so a Game Boy and a PlayStation sit on the same scale.

Sony holds six of the 15 places and Nintendo seven. Most figures are company-reported shipments, but Xbox 360 (84 million), Xbox One (58 million) and the PSP (80 million) are company statements or estimates, and Sony's own investor data lists 76.4 million for the PSP. The PS5 figure is 95.3 million shipped through June 30, 2026, and it is still selling. Switch 2, launched June 5, 2025, has 23.68 million but is too new to rank, so it is excluded.
