What the data shows
- In 2024, China ranks #1 with 997 TWh, ahead of United States (452 TWh) and Germany (142 TWh).
- Back in 2000, Germany was #1 with 9 TWh.
- The top spot changed hands twice: United States in 2008 and China in 2016.
- Biggest climber: Brazil, from #11 in 2007 to #4 in 2024.
- Brazil wasn't on the board in 2000 but is in the top 5 by 2024.
About this chart
Germany, Spain and Denmark pioneered wind power. The United States and China scaled it up, and China has generated more wind electricity than any other country since the mid-2010s.
Figures cover onshore and offshore wind, from Ember and the Energy Institute.
